Who Am I Meant to Be? Finding Your True Self in a World of Expectations

Who are you? It seems like such a simple question, but for so many of us, it’s the hardest one to answer. You’re bombarded with messages every single day from social media, from your family, from society telling you who you should be, what you should want, and how you should live. The pressure to fit into a neat little box can be suffocating, and it can leave you feeling lost, confused, and disconnected from the person you were truly created to be.
If you’re on a quest for self-discovery, I want you to know that your journey is a sacred one. What you’re facing is not a distraction or a detour; it is the very path toward your purpose. But it’s a path that is often clouded by the noise of the world.
In my work, I’ve sat with so many incredible young adults and mid-career professionals who feel this way. They have so much potential, so much light within them, but it’s being dimmed by the need to conform. This is why one of the most foundational principles in Progress Toward Purpose is Know Your Worth. Your worth is not determined by your job title, your relationship status, or the number of likes on your latest post. Your worth was sealed the moment you were created. You are, as the Bible says, a "chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people" (1 Peter 2:9).
Did you catch that? Peculiar. Unique. Set apart. The very things that make you different are the things that make you divine. The world may tell you to hide your quirks, to do whatever it takes to go along and get along, to be more like everyone else. But God is calling you to embrace the beautiful, one-of-a-kind masterpiece that is YOU.
This journey of identity exploration is not about becoming someone new. It’s about uncovering the person who has been there all along, buried under layers of fear, doubt, and other people’s expectations. It’s about giving yourself permission to be who you are, right now, in this moment.
In the Progress Toward Purpose Devotional, we take time to reflect on this. We ask the hard questions: What are the fears that are holding you back? What lies have you been believing about yourself? And most importantly, what does God say about you?
I remember a season in my life when I was trying so hard to be the person I thought everyone else wanted me to be. I was exhausted, unfulfilled, and I felt like a failure. It wasn’t until I surrendered that struggle and asked God to show me who He created me to be that I finally found my footing. It was a journey of letting go of the false self to make room for the true self.
Your identity is not something you have to invent. It is something you may have to discover. It is a treasure hunt, and God will provide you clues every step of the way—through your passions, your talents, and the desires of your heart.
What is one thing you love to do, something that makes you feel alive and completely yourself? That is a clue. What is a dream you’ve been afraid to say out loud? That is a clue. What is your love language? That is a clue!
This quest for self-discovery is not a solo mission. It’s a journey we can take together, in community, with God as our guide. If you’re tired of trying to be someone you’re not, if you’re ready to step into the freedom of your true identity, then I invite you to join us. The Progress Toward Purpose programs are a safe space to explore, to question, and to finally, joyfully, become the person you were always meant to be.
