What Am I Doing Wrong? Finding Your Footing in a World of Financial Uncertainty

Updated: Jan 5

I see you. I see the worry in your eyes as you look at your student loan statements, the anxiety that creeps in when rent is due, and that sinking feeling when you realize another month has gone by with little to nothing added to your savings. You might be looking at your life and asking, "What am I doing wrong? Why is it so hard to get ahead?"

I want you to take a deep breath and hear me when I say this: You are not alone, and you are not doing everything wrong. The world you're navigating is more complex and financially demanding than ever before. The pressure is immense, change is accelerating, and it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind. But I want to speak a word of hope into your heart today. What if this struggle isn’t a sign of your failure, but an invitation from God to discover a deeper purpose for your life and your finances?

In my own journey and in coaching so many just like you, I’ve learned that financial wholeness is deeply connected to progress toward purpose. When we feel adrift in our careers or stagnant in our growth, our finances often reflect that uncertainty. In my book, Progress Toward Purpose, we talk about the concept of Avoiding Stasis. It’s about realizing that you are designed to continuously grow and learn. Sometimes, financial struggle is a sign that we've become disconnected, stuck perhaps in a job that isn’t aligned with our gifts, or in an educational path that no longer serves the future we desire.

Have you ever felt that way? Like you're on a treadmill, moving but going nowhere? You might be earning a paycheck, but it doesn't feel like you're building a future. That’s often because the path you're on isn't maximizing your options, which is another key concept we explore. God has given you unique talents and passions, and when you begin to align your career with those divine gifts, you'll find that new opportunities and new financial avenues begin to open up.

But this isn't just about practical strategies and career moves. This is a spiritual journey. In the Progress Toward Purpose Devotional, we spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal the true desires of our hearts. Do you know what He has promised? In Psalm 37:4, it says, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Your desire for financial peace is not a selfish one; it may be a desire for the stability you need to fully step into the life He has called you to live.

So, what is one small step you can take today? It doesn’t have to be a giant leap. Maybe it’s taking a moment to pray and ask God for clarity. Maybe it’s writing down what you’re truly passionate about, beyond just paying the bills.

Being stuck is not your final destination. It is a season, and like all seasons, it will change. Your journey toward financial stability is waiting for you, and it is paved with purpose.

If you’re ready to move from just surviving to truly thriving, I invite you to go deeper. The Progress Toward Purpose book and devotional are designed to guide you, step-by-step, as you progress toward a financial future that is secure, abundant, and fully aligned with your God-given calling. Let's accelerate your journey together.
